American Empire furniture became fashionable circa 1815 and its popularity lasted through around 1840. It was most trendy around 1820 and around this time this flame mahogany sewing table was made. Three drawers with rounded fronts and the original, turned wooden knobs. Top drawer has divided compartments and a removable writing surface. The second drawer has divided compartments as well. Third drawer has a cylindrical bottom for storage. Book matched top and leaves. The leaves fold down when not in use. Scrolled standards that rest on scrolled feet with casters. No keys. Width of table is 20"; with the side leaves unfolded the surface measures 38.4".
