This piece is constructed of solid elm, which has been lacquered in black and adorned with hand-painted motifs. It hails from the Shanxi province of China. While its brass hardware is original, the metal hinges on the two middle doors were replaced at some point, likely in the mid-twentieth century. The rest of the wooden-dowel hinges are original. Given its advanced age, this piece is in decidedly fair condition; time has gifted it a rich patina.
