A beautifully preserved and highly collectible pair of original pirkka stools designed by ilmari tapiovaara and produced by asko, finland, circa 1959–1965. these are early, authentic examples from tapiovaara’s first production run – easily distinguished by the asko maker’s mark and the “tapiovaara design – made in finland” stamp on the underside. the pirkka series, introduced in 1958, was inspired by traditional finnish vernacular furniture and reinterpreted through tapiovaara’s modernist vision. The stools feature the iconic split-seat design in stained pine and sculptural tapered legs in black-painted solid birch. This combination of materials was a deliberate design choice to achieve both visual balance and exceptional durability. these vintage asko models possess a warmer, more tactile character than later reissues, with subtle aging to the pine that adds depth and authenticity. Their compact proportions and sculptural silhouette make them versatile as extra seating, bedside pieces or decorative accent stools. details • designer: ilmari tapiovaara • manufacturer: asko, finland • model: pirkka stool • year: circa 1959–1965 • materials: stained pine seat; black-painted birch legs • dimensions: • width: 43 cm • depth: 33 cm • height: 44 cm condition beautiful vintage condition with light, natural patina consistent with age and use.
