Late 19th Century Victorian Carved Oak Upholstered Storage Bench By Clark, Hunsiker & Co.

Chairish

$585

This late Victorian upholstered bench was manufactured by Clark, Hunsiker & Co. of Elbridge, New York, a respected American furniture maker active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Crafted in oak, the bench features carved scroll-form legs, a decorative apron with geometric carving, and turned stretchers, reflecting the transitional design language bridging late Victorian richness and early Edwardian restraint. The hinged upholstered seat opens to reveal a concealed storage compartment measuring approximately 10 inches wide by 16.5 inches long and 2.5 inches deep, making the piece both functional and historically expressive. The bench has been carefully restored with an emphasis on stabilization and preservation of original materials. New cotton padding and a period-appropriate decorative textile were added to the seat. Evidence of the original hinge placement guided the installation of appropriately scaled replacement hinges. The wood surface was gently cleaned, conditioned, and protected with a natural beeswax polish to preserve the original patina.
