A rare Italian 17th century, or possibly 16th century, walnut cassone. With a solid plank lift top, carved front, and paneled sides. The central portion carved with a sleeping baby. The sides with heraldic devises and the feet with Raphael style winged cherubs. The top secured with hand forged strap hinges. Note they are different from each other. One may be a replacement though both are very old. The cassone has its original lock but there is no key or strike plate. The top has some condition issues as seen in the photos. It is also slightly warped/cupped. The back feet have had some repairs and/or replacements. Please view all pictures carefully. This is a VERY OLD piece and is not perfect. The cassone measures 45" wide by 25 1/2" high, 18 1/2" deep. It is a solid piece of furniture, structurally sound, and quite heavy, made with thick boards. Guaranteed to be as described.
