Chairish

$4,210

This fully authentic 18th-century six-plank chest is a rare and evocative example of early European vernacular furniture. Hand-crafted from solid oak using traditional plank construction, this antique trunk or coffer reflects the honest craftsmanship and utilitarian beauty of rural interiors from the late 1700s. The chest is constructed from six wide oak planks and and has it's origins in The Netherlands. Joined with hand-forged nails and fitted with original iron hardware, including forged side handles and iron strap hinges. Raised on integrated legs, it combines the functionality of a storage coffer with the proportions of a small chest table, a form often seen in farmhouse and workshop settings. The surface displays a rich, time-worn patina with visible tool marks, shrinkage cracks, and age splits consistent with its period. These features are not flaws but authentic traces of more than two centuries of use, contributing to the unmistakable character and historical integrity of the piece. The interior remains clean and practical, ideal for storing textiles, documents, or household objects. Highly versatile, this antique oak chest works beautifully as a blanket chest, hallway trunk, side table, or decorative storage piece in both traditional and contemporary interiors. Its primitive form also makes it particularly attractive to collectors of early furniture, wabi-sabi interiors, and rustic European design.
