This attractive chest is made from camphor wood and has lovely natural honey coloured tone. Camphor wood was a popular material not only for its attractive appearance but also as it's aroma acts as a repellent to moths or wood boring insects. It was produced in Hebei province near Beijing around the start of the twentieth century when chests like this were typically used in China to hold clothes and were often made in sets to stack on top of each other. This is one of the smaller chests, beautifully made with dovetal joints and with a circular brass hardware that has been more recently fiited, in keeping with the original. Perfect for use today as a blanket trunk for a bedroom or used as a low coffee table in a living area, with handy storage space inside.
