This pretty old storage coffer was produced in the northern Chinese province of Hebei from pine wood. over 200 years ago. It has a 'hidden' space in the lower section accessed by removing the three drawers and would originally have been used for storing documents and valuable items. Each of the three drawers show a simple carving over the handle, with a similar design carved onto the bottom apron. The coffer is in its original dark finish, worn on the front of the drawers and on the top to a lovely patina adding charm and character. The wonderful open carving on each of the spandrels, finished in a now worn green lacquer. Adds a beautiful decorative element. The symetrical carvings each show an ornate floral pattern that tapers down towards the feet, incorporating an 'eternal knot' symbol towards the bottom. Perfect today as a small coffee table in front of a sofa or use as a lovely side table in bedroom.
