Japanese Mizuya Tansu Storage Cabinet, 1900s

Chairish

$3,268

This Japanese tansu is a mizuya-dansu: a traditional kitchen and pantry cabinet used in the mizuya, the area where tableware and kitchen essentials were stored and prepared. It is a well-designed storage piece with a clean, understated presence. Dimensions: height 101 cm, width 92.5 cm, depth 39 cm. The layout is especially practical. At the bottom there is a removable panel, revealing a compartment with a low shelf, with a large storage space below. On the right are four smaller drawers for accessories or documents. The central section is accessed through two sliding doors, and at the very top there is a wide, low drawer running the full width. The cabinet features functional metal hardware and two metal carrying handles on the sides. Dating to the Meiji period, the cabinet has a beautifully timeworn look. Age-related wear and old repairs are visible and form part of its character. Fully functional today, it remains a refined storage piece with a calm wabi-sabi feel—an authentic interior accent that is also genuinely useful.
