A Korean "Book Bandaji" (known as Chaek Jang) circa late 19th to early 20th century (end of Joseon period). Made form solid pine, the relatively large cabinet was placed in men's study and used to store books, manuscripts as well as other scholarly items. The multi-functional piece was also used to display collectibles such as vases on top. With a rather austere form with a row of four small drawers on top a large storage space with open doors, the chest has a composition commonly found in Morijang (Head-side Chest). The top plank does not stick out as most bookcases do. The hinges, pulls and lock plates were kept at a minimal, both in size and style, so not to distract the humble appearance of piece. Scholar items in Confucianism-dominated Joseon dynasty adhered to a simple aesthetic devoid of flamboyance. An unusual feature of this chest is the scalloped base apron with small arches, a style called Madae in Korean, which is rarely found in bookcase design. The chest was made from pine with the exterior stained in a rich dark color. It has been preserved well in its original condition showing small old nicks and chips on the edges and light wear and patina throughout the wood and brass hardware. The interior retains the residues of the old paper lining. A wonderful period example.
