Small enough for a nightstand and woven entirely from natural materials, this pair of bamboo-and-rattan lamps is pure mid-century French Riviera. Each has a round woven-cane base, curved supports rising to a central column, and a little conical shade made from the open hexagonal cane-weave known as Vienna straw. Switched on, the open mesh throws a warm, freckled light across a table. The lamps have been newly wired for safe use and take E14 bulbs (available in the US and Europe). Lamps of this type were made through the 1950s and 1960s in the idiom of the French designer Louis Sognot, who brought bamboo and rattan into serious decoration. They were produced anonymously by skilled cane-workers in France and Italy and are unmarked, as nearly all of them are. The bamboo keeps the dark scorched markings characteristic of the material, and the pair has aged to warm, honeyed tones — one shade a touch more sun-faded than its twin.
