This tapestry is one of the Fine Verdure Tapestries designed by J-B Oudry and woven around 1735. Many Verdure Tapestries were woven throughout the 16th to 18th Centuries, with designs based on plant forms, reflecting the interest in botanical themes during this period. The theme of the Verdure style of tapestries had a purely ornamental role in interior decoration, creating an illusion of space, and suggesting a retreat into the scene, providing an effect of distance and perspective. The scene is of a parkland setting in the Lignon Valley in France and the original tapestry is at the Chteau de Chevreuse. The small town of Aubusson, an important weaving centre for several centuries, became well-known for its verdure tapestries in the 18th Century. Production was traditionally carried out by small family workshops GROUPED in guild organisations, creating mainly le rustique style tapestries, such as the ever popular Verdures, and other rural scenes and landscapes. The skill of the weavers was thereby passed down in families from generation to generation. This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
