This tapestry is a fine example of a classical Verdure Tapestry, such as those woven in the traditional weaving areas of Flanders, Brussels and Audenarde during the 17th Century. Verdure (or Greenery) Tapestries were woven throughout the 16th to 18th Centuries, with designs based on plant forms, reflecting the interest in botanical themes during this period. The theme of the Verdure style of tapestries had a purely ornamental role in interior decoration, creating an illusion of space, and suggesting a retreat into the scene, providing an effect of distance and perspective. Many Verdure Tapestries were woven in Audenarde, and this important weaving area became patronised by the aristocracy. This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
