1883 Set Of 2 Antique French Botanical Lithographs-Revue Horticole, Matted

Chairish

$345

This is a set of 2 matted antique French botanical chromolithographs that date to 1883. They came from a French publication, "Revue Horticole", a comprehensive source of scientific information on the history and cultivation of the botanical world. It was widely respected as the go-to resource of horticulture study. The journal contained chromolithographs of plant species. This pair showcase the Onoseris Drakeana (of the Daisy family) and the Gloxinia. There is a beautiful depth of detail and interest in these botanicals. The techonology of chromolithography was a time consuming process developed in the 1860s for making muti-colored prints. It ultilized the use of multiple stones, one for each color. It was an expensive technique that required skilled craftsmen. The process of successive layering of colors and tones resulted in a beauty much like handpainted oil paintings. It was targeted primarily to the art-oriented audiences of the time. Today, chromolithpgraphs are considered "fine art". The expensive process was replaced by cheaper offset printing in the late 1930s. These images have a true sense of natural beauty with warm color tones. They are rich in intricate details. They are clean and pristine! No indications of age markings. Each measures 6.25 x 19.75 inches in size. Each comes matted in a neutral tone 16 x 20 inch custom mat, ready for standard size frames. They make wonderful wall decor.
