Chairish

$6,500

Gutzon Borglum was a famous sculptor best known for creating Mount Rushmore. The inscription at the bottom of this piece, signed by "Missy Moloney," provides historical context for the piece. It explains that this sketch was created by Borglum as a preliminary study before creating his monumental bronze statue also titled "The Lonely Lincoln" famously located in Indiana. The description also mentions the reproduction of the sketch for friends who share the belief that "this Nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom" which is a direct reference to Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. The "Lonely Lincoln" is a solitary, pensive statue of Abraham Lincoln created in 1911 by renowned sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who later masterminded Mount Rushmore. It depicts a contemplative, seated Lincoln inspired by White House garden accounts. It remains one of the most recognized portrayals of the 16th president.
