Academic Male Figure Study and Seated Male Nude* Brown, c. 1915 This pair of academic male nude studies by Brown presents two complementary views of the male figure: one frontal and upright, the other seated and seen from behind. Though the artist remains unidentified beyond the signature, the drawings show a serious engagement with traditional figure study, particularly in their attention to anatomy, gesture, tonal modeling, and the expressive possibilities of posture. The standing figure is more direct and performative. The model faces outward, with one arm extended and the other raised near the head. This pose gives the drawing a sense of tension and movement, expanding the body horizontally while keeping the legs firmly grounded. Brown uses darker charcoal passages across the chest, abdomen, shoulders, and arms to emphasize musculature and volume. The face is also given notable attention, giving the figure a psychological presence beyond a simple anatomical exercise. The seated nude is quieter and more introspective. Seen mostly from behind, the figure sits on a lightly indicated stool with his head turned in profile. This rotation gives the drawing a more sculptural quality, allowing the viewer to move visually from the head and shoulder down the spine, across the hips, and through the bent leg. The back is especially well handled, with loose but deliberate marks defining the shoulder blades, waist, and curve of the torso without overworking the form. Together, the two drawings create a strong study in contrast. The standing figure emphasizes frontal anatomy, structure, and outward presence, while the seated figure explores weight, twist, privacy, and the expressive contour of the back. One feels more like a formal academy pose; the other feels more intimate and observational. This pairing gives the works greater depth than either drawing would have alone. Brown’s use of charcoal gives both studies immediacy. The marks remain visible, with areas of smudging, loose contour, and atmospheric background allowing the figures to emerge from the paper rather than sit rigidly upon it. As unidentified academic works, the value of these drawings rests on subject, quality, and visual strength rather than name recognition.
