A masterfully composed oil on board by listed American Impressionist Bye Bitney (b. 1960, Argentina/Montana), depicting a mother with infant and toddler on a sunlit lawn, a black and white spaniel turning toward the group. The central maternal figure — rendered with extraordinary compositional intelligence, her full skirt creating a monumental anchoring mass from which all other figures radiate — gives the painting a quietly heroic quality reminiscent of Mary Cassatt and the great Impressionist tradition of maternal subjects. Bitney's painterly influences include John Singer Sargent, Joaquín Sorolla, and Nicolai Fechin — and all three are legible here in the dappled light, the confident loose brushwork, and the psychological warmth of the composition. He began showing in major galleries at age 22 and has been represented by Coda Gallery, Palm Desert and Long Gallery, Scottsdale. His work has sold at Coeur d'Alene Art Auction, Heritage Auctions, and Altermann Galleries.
