Antique oil painting on board by William Wallace Gilchrist. It is a painting of the artist mother done in 1905. He made a few renditions of her. His work and artistic talent went undiscovered until the 1990s, when the house he lived in was sold and his collection of many, many paintings were discovered and bought up by collectors. This is a very rare and beautiful painting in great condition in a fabulous frame. Measuring 24 by 28 framed, the painting on mahogany panel board measures 16 by 20. Framed in a ornate gilt plaster and wood frame signed on the back by the framer. William Wallace Gilchrist, Jr. (1879 - 1926) was active/lived in New York, Maine. William Gilchrist Jr is known for Portrait, figure, genre and interior scene painting. William Wallace Gilchrist, an Impressionist painter of landscapes, genre scenes, interiors, and an accomplished portrait painter, grew up in Pennsylvania. In his youth he spent summers on the Maine coast at Prout's Neck where he knew Winslow Homer and was one of the few artists to receive friendly criticism from the artist. Throughout his short career, due to an early death, he was active on the coast north of Portland, Maine
