This small and delightful 1840s Oil on Board painting captures the peace and tranquility of a summer’s morning in the English countryside. It is displayed in a magnificent new ornate wood frame. The painting reimagines pristine nature in the manner of Constable, as dappled foliage, a still river, billowy clouds and a distant townscape veiled by haze materialize in sunlight. Frederick Williams (Waters) Watts (England, 1800-1870) is believed to have never signed his paintings, and yet his style is unmistakable, primarily because he was the most important follower of his contemporary John Constable, England’s greatest landscape painter. Watts was one of the early plein air painters in England after Constable, and like him, Watts often included rivers, ponds or lakes in his compositions, hence he is sometimes identified as Willam “Waters” Watts. Watts was trained at the Royal Academy in London and exhibited there and at other prestigious institutions throughout England during his life. Known Provenance: the Ruskin Gallery - an old and reputable art gallery in London. Measurements: Without Frame: 7-5/8” x 10-3/8” Framed: 14-3/4” x 17-3/4”
