A strong landscape in the Barbizon style. The figures are over-whelmed by the natural majesty of the trees and sky. Cabat was an extremely popular and successful painter who, as Benezit reports, "was looked upon as the artistic hope of the period." He became director of the Academy of Rome in 1879, a position he held until 1885. Cabat's paintings are in many important museums including the Louvre. He is listed in Thieme and Becker in addition to Benezit. This painting is signed and has received Sotheby's highest rating for authenticity. It is in an elegant, heavy, period frame - probably the original. Sale: Sotheby's New York, june 30. 1981 lot 114.
