"Color Build: Summer Sail in Royal Blue" is 16x16x1" reclaimed wood and acrylic paint nestled in a maple panel frame. The Color Build Series started off as a daily warm up practice using recycled cardboard in hand cut geometric shapes to create small compositions with. Rather than glue the work down, I would take a photo of the collage and toss the materials back in a box to continue to reuse in the future. I was playing with the idea of impermanence. A thing can just be a thing for 10 minutes, an hour, at most an afternoon. One day I passed a neighbor's house with a big pile of wood with a “free” sign and knew I needed it! I started cutting, sanding and painting small geometric pieces and photographing the results. Again, this was art just for the moment. After photographing the daily collage, I would put the pieces into a large bin and reuse and cut new pieces as I needed. “Building” with color became totally addictive and brought so much play and joy into my studio. I felt like a little kid playing with wooden blocks again. It is very satisfying to work in both 2D and 3D alongside each other. Both practices influence and strengthen each other. I love piecing together a Color Build and translating it loosely to canvas.
