Early 20th Century Alpine Landscapes, Mer De Glace, Chamonix, Pair Of Gilt-Framed Paintings

Chairish

$450

Charming pair of early 20th-century European school Alpine landscape paintings depicting views associated with Mer de Glace near Chamonix, France, one of the most celebrated glacier scenes of the period. These are hand-painted works on board, created in the tradition of Continental Alpine tourist studios active circa 1900–1925. One panel is inscribed on the reverse with the name “Janus” and the location Mer de Glace, likely referencing a studio or atelier designation rather than a documented individual artist, which was common practice for works produced for the Grand Tour and Alpine travel market. Both paintings are presented in substantial, richly ornamented gilt frames featuring foliate and classical motifs. The frames appear original to the works and contribute significantly to their visual impact and decorative appeal. The scenes themselves are finely rendered with atmospheric skies, mountainous terrain, and water elements typical of romantic Alpine imagery. Condition is consistent with age, including surface wear to frames, minor cracking, and aged backing materials. Structurally sound and ready for display. An elegant decorative pair well suited to traditional, European, or collected interiors. Particularly appealing when displayed together, though each stands well on its own. Attributed to the European School, circa 1900–1925. Outside measurements are 11.5" x 9.5"
