An early edition Japanese woodblock print "Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) from the series Collected Views of Japan II, Kansai Edition (Nihon fukei shu II Kansai hen). The series was created in 1933 and this is an early edition with the publisher copyright seal "Hanken shoyu fukyo mosha Watanabe Shozaburo" dated from 1931-1941. Signed and sealed Hasui in plate. A prolific artist and designer of the shin-hanga movement, Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) was one of most important printmakers in modern Japan. His work, mostly traditional Japanese landscape stylishly composed, was influenced by Western art. With such infusion, they display a new dimensional depth and realistic ambience. Especially many of his nocturnal scenes emphasized on the atmospheric effect by playing with light and shadow. With a career spanning forty years with about 620 designs, Kawase Hasui was recognized as a Living National Treasure for his contribution to Japanese art and culture.
