Signed lower right, 'Arthur Dawson' (American, 1857-1922) and painted circa 1915; additionally inscribed, verso, 'The Stream'. Bearing old framing label: Ferguson Art Shop, Flint, Michigan Born in Crewe, England, Arthur Dawson studied first as Kensington School and, subsequently, under David Law and William Morris in London. Dawson moved to America in 1887 and kept a studio in Chicago for ten years. During his time in Chicago, he joined the Chicago Municipal Art Society and was a founding member of the Chicago Society of Artists. Dawson was also a member of the Artist's Fund Society, Lotos Club and Authors' Club (London). In 1898, he was in charge of the restoration of paintings at the New York Public Library and at West Point, where he was also the official portrait painter. He exhibited widely and with success including at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1898, 1902), the Pan-Am Expo, Buffalo, New York (1901, prize), the Society of Independent Artists (1917) and the Art Institute of Chicago.
