Get in Gear - Geometric Abstract Expressionist Mandala in Acrylic on Paper A bold abstract painting in red by California-based artist, Ricardo de Silva (American/Brazil, 20th C). A large gear (possibly a transmission flywheel flexplate) is used to form the basis of this painting. The gear has been layered atop a light blue background, creating a contrast between the image and background. The pressed image had been modified with water and additional layers of paint. DeSilva was born in Brazil and grew up in Los Angeles. He was a gallery owner, first in Santa Barbara in the 1960's and 70's, then in San Jose in the 1980's. He was dedicated to promoting the work of talented upcoming artists, including Kogyo and Hasui Kiyochika, Robert Frame, Jim Stuckenberg, Alice Robertson Carr, Deborah Eve Alastra, Russell Kelly, and Diana Mark.
