This is a fantastic Large Original Mixed Media Painting on Paper by Listed California Artist, Hendrik Grise (1914-1982). Grise was a prolific artist who was part of many of the major art movements of the mid-20th Century. He studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the Dallas Museum School of Art before coming to Southern California in the late 1940s, where he consistently exhibited his work. He was friends with several artists from the New York School, including Mark Tobey who was close to Jackson Pollock. The influences of his time are clear in his bright, fluid works. This stunning piece depicts a vibrant stylized female figure surrounded by energetic abstract mark-making. Executed in saturated reds, blues, yellows, blacks, and whites, the composition combines expressive figurative elements with Grise's signature gestural brushwork and splatter techniques, creating a bold and visually engaging work. It is not dated but looks to have been done around 1970. Sold unframed. Will ship boxed to preserve integrity. Provenance and Certification: We bought the bulk of Hendrick Grise's estate in 2015 and are beginning to market his works and introduce him more broadly to the public. Condition: Fair. No creases or paint loss. Upper right corner has two tears - one about 1" and the other about 2". A good framer should be able to mount this so it's no noticeable.
