For sale is an original set of two early 19th-century lithographs by jean-baptiste debret, taken from the monumental work: voyage pittoresque et historique au brésil (paris, ca. 1834–1839). The prints depict scenes from life and ethnographic studies of colonial brazil and are considered one of the most important iconographic sources for the history of 19th-century brazil. the set includes: 1. ‘nègres cangueiros / différentes nations nègres’ – a scene with porters + portraits of representatives of various african peoples 2. ‘négresses marchandes d'angou / fours à chaux’ – market scene with female traders + industrial landscape (lime kilns) both plates come from the same volume (‘2e partie’) and form a coherent collector's set. Technique and dating: stone lithography on parchment paper, black and white print, early 19th century print (ca. 1840–1850), printer: thierry frères, successeurs de engelmann & cie, originals from the period – these are not contemporary reproductions. Condition: very good, natural signs of ageing, legible lines, clear typography, full margins, no trimming, framed in an aesthetic frame (20th century) with a passe-partout.
