Henri-Théodore Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) was a French painter and lithographer known for his detailed and realistic still lifes and for his group portraits of artists and writers of Paris. He found commercial success in England before succeeding in his homeland, where he had been trained. Toward the late 19th century, Fantin-Latour turned his style toward the romantic and an operatic and symbolism narrative. His palette softened and became nuanced and delicate. His subjects were for awhile selected from Wagnerian opera, and eventually became creations of his own imagination. This small oil on canvas depicts a standing nude with a drape. This painting was sold by Christie’s in June of 2003, as the stickers to the back of the piece show. Any written provenance can be accessed through Christie’s archives.
