Louis Suire was a renowned French artist, known as the “painter of light” and especially associated with the isle of Ré, where he established a studio. Talented in many fields, he was a writer, publisher, and musician as well as a painter. Based in La Rochelle, he was a popular and hard-working artist who produced sensitive and elegant work and cared deeply about the region. This charming 1927 coastal landscape is an original oil on panel by the French painter Louis Suire (1899–1987). The painting depicts several small sailing boats resting on calm waters in the beautiful Gulf of Morbihan in Brittany. Soft light, delicate reflections and a distant rocky island create a tranquil Breton maritime scene. The work is signed and dated 1927 in the lower right, and is a fine early example of Suire’s atmospheric coastal painting.
