A beautiful Venetian etching by Italian painter and printmaker Ludovico Cavaleri, titled Mattino alla Giudecca – Venezia (“Morning at Giudecca — Venice”). This evocative harbor scene captures the quiet poetry of early morning light on the Venetian lagoon, with moored fishing boats rendered in velvety shadow against softly dissolving architecture and shimmering reflections. Born in Milan in 1867, Cavaleri abandoned medical studies to pursue painting and printmaking as a largely self-taught artist. He became associated with the final phase of Lombard Naturalism, developing a celebrated body of marine and landscape views influenced by contemporaries such as Pompeo Mariani and Giorgio Belloni. The King of Italy bought several of his pieces and his works are held in many major collections, including The Galleries of Modern Art in Rome, Turin, Genoa and Milan. This composition depicts Giudecca, the storied Venetian island long favored by artists for its working waterfronts, expansive lagoon views, and quieter atmosphere apart from the crowds of central Venice.
