Born in 1683, Mark Catesby was an English naturalist and one of the first to explore the New World, documenting its plants and animals. He made several ocean voyages to collect specimens, spending a total of eleven years in the colonies. Returning to England, Catesby taught himself copper etching over several years and, upon completion, presented this collection to the Queen of England.
