Carmen “Menchu” Gal Orendain (1919–2008) was a Spanish painter, known for her contribution to modern art in Spain, and especially for her landscapes and portraits. Her style is characterized by an expressive use of color and an influence from Post-Impressionist and Fauvist movements. Born in Irún, Gipuzkoa, she showed an interest in art from a young age. Her family, with artistic inclinations, supported her vocation. She studied at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, where she was a student of painters such as Aurelio Arteta and Daniel Vázquez Díaz. Her training also included trips to Paris, where she came into contact with the European avant-garde and artists such as Henri Matisse.
