Mid-Century Artwork Signed By French Artist Charles Marcon

Chairish

$375

Wonderful artwork by Charles Marcon. Marcon painted oil on canvas but also gouache on paper as in this piece. A dreamlike feeling uniquely resonates in his works. A familiarity with cave art is also visible. Charles Marcon French, 1920–2019 Self-taught painter Charles Marcon was born in Terrenoire in the Loire, France. He exhibited throughout Paris and in Arles, Switzerland, London, Montreal, New York, San Francisco, Brussels and Caracas, Venezuela. He was represented by gallerist Jean-Claude Bellier from the mid-1950s through the 80s. Many collectors were interested in his work, including some who were fascinated by Francis Bacon. Waldemar George, who discovered him in the early 1950s, saw in Marcon a promising heir to Chaïm Soutine.. George's enthusiasm in Marcon's work lead him to become an attentive reviewer; he found some expressionist evidence in Marcon's work at a time when the debate between figuration and abstraction was stirring the art world.
