This beautiful portrait of a woman sewing is signed by the Mid-Century French artist Marius Woulfart (b.1905). From a young age, Woulfart trained artistically with his artist father Max Woulfart. He described himself as a "sentimentalist painter" - influenced mostly by the times and fashion. Most of his oeuvre could be described as Expressionist. This term refers to the movement which manipulates the visual elements of an image to convey intense subjective feelings. In Expressionist art, color is highly intense, brushwork is free and application is heavy or textured. Woulfart did create works in different genres throughout his career. In the words of the journalist and writer Marcel Sauvage, author of the biography of Joséphine Baker: "Woulfart, whose palette is of an astonishing richness, manifests an increasingly rare control.
