"Morning In Venice" Circa 1887, Signed By Walter Franklin Lansil (1846-1925)

Chairish

$6,800

This evocative oil on canvas painting by Walter Lansil captures the atmospheric beauty of the Venitian Lagoon against a backdrop of La Guidecca and San Georgio Maggiore. A rustic fishing boat and two figures anchors the foreground. One figure gazes backwards at the larger ship moored nearby, its sails and rigging loosely furled and towering above the modest fishermen. The water is rendered with loose brushstrokes that depict the reflections of sunlight rising over the water and the romantic, somewhat melancholic mood of the city. The painting is signed "Walter F. Lansil" on the lower left corner. On the reverse side, the canvas is inscribed "morning in Veniice", dated 1887-88 and signed "Walter F. Lansil". The artwork measures 30 1/4 inches x 18 1/4 inches or 39" x 27 1/2" with its channelled and semi-gilded wooden frame, ready to hang. About the Artist Walter F, Lansil (1846-1925) was an American marine painter who earned the nickname "Venetian Lansil" due to his many paintings of Venice. Born in Maine, Lansil studied at the Academie Julien in Paris and traveled extensively in Europe from his home base in Boston, where he was a member of the Boston Art Club.
