An important Old Master oil on canvas painting by the Flemish artist, Jan Cossiers, a follower of the style of Caravaggio (1600-1671). Born in Antwerp in 1600, Jan Cossiers was a pupil of his father, the painter Antoon Cossiers (died 1646/1647), and also studied under Cornelis de Vos. He traveled to Rome in 1623 and subsequently resided in Aix-en-Provence from 1623 to 1626, where he worked for the Brotherhood of Penitents. After returning to Antwerp, he joined the Guild of San Luca in 1628/1629 and the rhetorical hall De Violieren in 1632/1633 and his style was influenced by Rubens. He was elected dean of the guild in 1640. Apart from the Caravaggesque scenes for which he is best known, Cossiers also painted altarpieces, mythological scenes and portraits. This work depicts Jesus Christ and the Roman Governor of Judea, Pontius Pilate, with the Latin phrase "Ecce Homo" (behold the man) painted to the top, the painting dating circa 1630. Another such painting by Cossiers depicting Pontius Pilate and Christ from the waist up, rather than full length figures and much smaller at approximately half the size was sold at Ader-Tajan auction in Paris for $25,960 in March 1994.
