This painting by American artist Robert Stockton Rogers (1896-1959) depicts the iconic Church of the Immaculate Conception sometime early in the twentieth century, while the Georgia state capital looks on from behind. This antebellum church was saved from burning by Sherman’s forces during the Civil War thanks to the courageous and persistent appeal of its pastor, Father Thomas O’Reilly, to the Union Army’s commander.
