Pair Of Hand Colored Engravings After Claude Lorrain

Chairish

$795

A fine pair of antique copperplate engravings, versions of original drawings by the 17th century French Old Master artist Claude Lorrain, one from the collection of the Duke of Devonshire and the other from the collection of the Earl Spencer. Depicted are landscape scenes of country life: one in antiquity and the other contemporary (17th century) seaside activities, rendered in painterly sepia wash enhanced with hand coloring on wove paper. The pair include plates: 45 from 1774 and 51 from 1807. The initial release of this series of engravings etched by Robert Earlom and published by John Boydell, was in 1774. The plates are in overall good condition with clear plate marks, some toning to the paper. The colored versions of these engraving are rather rare and have a charm all their own. The new reeded frames are painted a French blue with complex handpainted filage on the vintage matting. H: 19 ½ W: 23 ½ D: ¾
