Pierre Ernest Kohl (1897-1985) was was predominantly influenced by the 1900s and 1910s. The vigorous development of pictorial art defined the first decades of the twentieth century. It was an era of experimentation and post-Impressionism, with artists first delving into Expressionism and Abstraction. Kohl began his artistic career as an industrial draughtsman for the shipyards of Monaco. During the 1920s, Kohl moved to Berlin and worked as an illustrator for German magazines. After leaving Berlin in 1933 due to the rise of the Nazi Party, Kohl returned to Monaco and began to focus on his paintings, creating portraits and nudes. He has also participated in exhibitions. He also painted many portraits of personalities from Monegasque and French society. Kohl was considered one of the most important artists of the Expressionist scene in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. The dreamy melancholic expression of the young woman is captivating. The picture signed on the lower left corner Frame size: W: 31.5”; H: 40” Canvas size: W: 24”; H: 32”
