This oil on canvas is signed -r. Chr.- lower left and depicts a danish fjord landscape, painted by rasmus christiansen. A herd of black-and-white cattle grazes and rests in the foreground meadow, rendered with close attention to individual markings and stance. The land falls away toward a curving fjord, with a cluster of white farm buildings and a church spire set among trees on the far bank, and further fields and woodland receding toward the horizon. the sky takes up much of the upper canvas, painted in soft bands of blue and cloud that establish the flat, even light typical of the artist's coastal scenes. Brushwork is loose in the sky and distance, tightening in the cattle and near foreground. The painting is held in its original giltwood frame, with cast foliate corners and a beaded inner edge, and carries a brass nameplate reading rasmus christiansen. Canvas and paint layer stable, with light craquelure consistent with age. Frame shows wear and small losses to the gilding at the corners and edges, with an old repair to one corner join. Original canvas backing and stretcher. Presents well overall.
