A complex and lyrical equestrian work by this well-listed Italian Modernist and exponent of magical realism. Signed lower right 'Spazzali' for Luciano Spazzali (Italian, 1911-1997) and dated 1958. Luciano Spazzali studied at the Academy of Art in Bologna from 1932 to 1937 under Giorgio Morandi. He first exhibited in 1951 and, during this first year, was awarded both the Biennale Internazionale d’Arte in Genoa and the National Painting Prize. Over a long and successful career, Spazzali was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards including the Marzotto prize in 1953, the Michetti prize in 1953, 1958 and 1959, and the four year Roman award stipend in 1965.
