“Sailboats On The Shore” By S. Seymour Thomas (1868-1956)

$1,650

We might share with you the biography of Texas-born Steven Seymour Thomas (1868-1956), but it would take pages. Consider his precocious talent, which catapulted him to fame in New York City by age 16. There are also the wide-ranging artistic studies spanning Texas to New York to Paris, the latter being art-central in the late 1800s. Thomas made Paris his home for 25 years, creating this atmospheric composition in grays during that time, judging by the Paris supplier stamped on the verso. Furthermore, there is the artist’s dazzling portrait gallery of distinguished (and busy sitters) like Woodrow Wilson, who sat for three of them. A list of Thomas’ multitudinous awards, such as France’s Legion of Honor, also needs pages. Perhaps it is enough here to note that the artist’s work has been collected by The Metropolitan Museum of Art; the White House; the New Jersey State House; the Smithsonian; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California; and the Herron School of Art and Design, Indianapolis, Indiana. Dare we suggest that if Thomas’ work has appealed to curators representing these noted institutions, it might pass muster in yours?
