Spanish Artist, Scenes, Mid-1800s, Oil On Canvases, Framed, Set Of 2

Chairish

$2,610

A fine set of oils on canvas depicting two scenes of rural Spanish life in the 19th century. The first depicts two men in the shade of a building, talking, accompanied by their horses. A dog and a child are added to the scene. In the background, a smoking lime kiln and the entrance to a town in the distance appear. This episode of Hispanic life is intriguing because of the arrangement of its characters. The central figure features two horses eating fodder. The second painting features a woman and a man traveling with their animals. The woman, reminiscent of Mary, stands astride a brown horse. She looks down, lost in thought. Her companion, a shepherd's crook resting on her shoulder, watches over her. Accompanied by cows, a hen, a horse and sheep, they leave the town, whose ramparts appear in the distance. The painter carefully describes the various protagonists, their gestures and their clothing. Surrounding the canvases, magnificent carved frames in gilded wood are the perfect complement to these painted scenes. Richly ornamented, they feature stylized moldings and arabesque carvings. ******** Period: Mid-19th century Dimensions of each painting: Width : 53 cm Height : 42 cm Depth : 4 cm
