He studied at University of Michigan and Florida State University, as well as Cranbrook Academy of Art where he received his Master's degree. O'Connor went on to teach at State University of New York and was a visiting professor at the University of Michigan. His works are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Whitney Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art, among others.
