An oil on canvas seascape, English or American, depicting a ship balanced atop a large rough swell amid other big waves and with a threatening dark sky in the distance. The waves have good color and form and soften towards the left, where the sky remains blue and the water much more tame. Apparently unsigned, the stretcher in the back is pinned at the corners with patented iron braces dated 1885, making the date of this painting likely the last 15 years of the 19th century. Lovely bright gilded frame has layers of nice gilt composition details and appears to be original. Good antique condition overall, with craquelure, light wear to both the frame and canvas.
