Signed lower right 'E.M.Heath' for Edda Maxwell Heath (American, 1874-1972) and painted circa 1930. A lyrical and romantic view of this early California mission and picturesque landmark, built in 1771 and located the closest of any mission to the Pacific ocean. Painted by a well-listed, early California woman artist who studied with Chase and Henri in New York. Framed in a period and delicately hand carved, painted and gilded, swept frame within a card mat. Framed dimensions: 14.25 x .75 x 18.25 inches Edda Maxwell Heath first studied at the New York School of Art and New York's Pratt Institute, and, subsequently with a variety of prominent artists and teachers including William Merritt Chase, Arthur Dove and Robert Henri. While living in New York, Heath was commissioned to paint portraits of leading political figures including Woodrow Wilson, William H. Taft, and Theodore Roosevelt. In 1928, she moved to Carmel, California where she continued to paint and remained an active part of the California art community until her death in 1972. Heath exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. Her work is held in private and public collections including the permanent collections of Monterey Peninsula Museum and Idaho State College.
