These ships were a series of German steel-hulled four and five-masted barques built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for the F. Laeisz shipping company of Hamburg. They were renowned for their speed and reliability, particularly on the trade routes to South America and Australia. The term "Flying P-Liner" came from the company's house flag, which featured a white "P" on a blue background, and their reputation for fast passages.
