Fantastic Orientalist painting, probably early/mid 20th century. Large-scale scene of an Arabic walled city with a procession of people walking and riders on camels entering through the arched gate at right and into the gate at left toward the mosque, which is crowned with a classic dome and minaret topped with a crescent moon in traditional Islamic architectural style. The colors—red fabrics, green palm trees set against the blue and off-white background—are vivid. The gilt wood frame is beautifully carved in an Art Nouveau style. Signed bottom right, but not decipherable. It looks like Jh Sambret or Th Sambret. Oil on board. Very large statement piece—5' 3" across—that would be perfect in a main living area.
