Oil on canvas “Abstract Composition”, Yves Frangeul, 1964 - France Technique: Oil on canvas Title of the work: “Abstract Composition” Artist: Yves Frangeul Signed in the lower right corner Style: Abstract Expressionism Year: 1964 Country of origin: France Provenance: Italian private collection Good condition considering its age and use Overall dimensions: 78 x 95 x 6 cm Dimensions without frame: 64 x 80 cm A spectacular oil on canvas with an abstract and avant-garde theme, by the French painter Yves Frangeul, dated 1964. The work presents a non-figurative scene, seemingly a superimposition of organic masses of color due to the fluid forms that structure the canvas and the patches of color arranged in space. A series of planes in ochre, sienna, and yellow tones dominate the surface, while toward the left and bottom edges, two blocks of deep cobalt blue break up the composition. There is no defined perspective, created instead through very subtle, streaked brushstrokes. It is presented framed in a carved, gilded wooden frame with moldings of parallel lines. The last volume closest to the canvas is satin gold, a way of drawing attention to the work. Abstract Expressionism Abstract Expressionism was an artistic trend or movement that reflected the emotions and creative freedom of the painter, a response to the rigidity of the postwar era and the entirety of the preceding figurative tradition. It emerged in the United States and Europe during the 1940s and sought to portray inner reality, often focusing on the power of gesture, color, and material, capturing moments that reflected the artist's identity, subconscious, and plastic intuition. Typically, the compositions were not grand historical or literary representations, but rather fields of color. In France, this lyrical abstraction saw remarkable development, especially in the 1950s and 1960s. The frame protecting the artwork is offered as a gift, but it has intrinsic value.
