This exceptional late 17th century Flemish side chair is finely carved with an architectural presence that reflects the Baroque taste of the period and is traditionally attributed to the circle of Daniel Marot. The tall, pierced back is richly worked with scrolling foliage, floral medallions, and bold symmetrical ornament, framed by turned and carved uprights that give the chair a commanding vertical emphasis. The depth and precision of the carving speak to a high level of craftsmanship intended for elite interiors. The chair stands on robust turned legs joined by a shaped stretcher base, grounding the elaborate back with a sense of solidity and balance.
